In a time where suffering seems to override joy; where control, suppression, and anger appear rife and overbearing in our supposed surroundings, we are being gifted the opportunity to overcome—
The time has arrived to accept our calling to become stewards – of our bodies, our hearts, our minds, our souls, and our collective Mother, Earth.
Reiki is one such path, but one of many.
If this is your path, you will hear it echoing within you – listen – your heart will know the way.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique used to induce stress reduction and relaxation, reduce inflammation, release emotional trauma and provide natural pain relief.
Reiki comes from the Japanese “Rei” meaning spiritual, and “Ki” meaning energy. This healing modality has been passed from Reiki Master to student for the past hundred years. To use reiki, you need to be attuned.
Reiki is considered an alternative or complementary therapy of healing and is generally used alongside western medicine.
As a reiki master, I can affirm its wondrous benefits, not only for the physical aspect of your health but for you as a whole:
- your mental health,
- the health of your emotional body
- your energetic body
- your spiritual well-being.
You see, when you take the approach of healing the root of the problem – instead of simply masking the symptoms – you overcome all the obstacles you thought you never would—and you become the master of your life.
The most prominent form of reiki practised worldwide today is Usui Reiki, which is a renovated version of an ancient technique, rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century.
What is the History of Reiki?
Dr Mikao Usui was a Christian minister whose curiosity led him on a quest to uncover the miracles of Jesus. Having searched for answers in Christian schools in the US to no avail, Usui found himself exploring Buddhist and Sanskrit scriptures in the Orient. Eventually, he discovered ancient healing symbols in some Sanskrit writings but admittedly lacked the ability to use them.
Usui took it upon himself to climb the nearby Mount Kurama in Japan, where he carried out a 21-day fast. On the 21st morning, a ball of white light struck him in the forehead, and he saw the symbols again, but this time with perfect understanding. From that day forth, Dr Usui began healing and teaching using Reiki.
What are the 5 principles of Reiki?
Reiki has five simple principles or affirmations. I affirm these each morning; and as I do, my heart is filled with gratitude.
They are as follows:
- Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
In the words of Eckhart Tolle, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.”
- Just for today, I will not worry.
A reminder to trust in the universe. When you do things right and offer your best, the universe will always provide. Trust in this and you will live free from fear.
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
Live a quiet and peaceful life. Anger hurts others and yourself.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
We grow through challenge and guided effort. Send out good and receive it into your life in the form of unprecedented blessings.
- Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.
A sense of oneness is the cornerstone to a healthy society. There is no distinction between self and others, only the existence of the same soul. Kindness to all things reflects kindness to oneself and to the earth.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
The benefits of Reiki are many, as many as you can imagine. Here are some of the most documented benefits:
- Relieves pain, anxiety, fatigue
- Treats depression
- Promotes harmony and balance
- Breaks down energetic and emotional blockages
- Accelerates the body’s self-healing capacity
- Cleanses body of toxins
- Boosts immune system
- Improves focus
- Helps you sleep better
- Promotes spiritual growth
Reiki is a therapy that draws people to her. She knows those who she can help, and those drawn to her know it, too.
What does Reiki do for pain?
When Dr Usui realized the bolt of lightning had given him the gift of Reiki, he began healing immediately; starting with his toe, which he had stubbed while running excitedly down Mount Kurama! He instinctively held his bleeding toe in his hands and the pain vanished. The term “healing hands” had its origins somewhere—
When he arrived at a refuge at the foot of the mountain, he encountered a young woman with an aching tooth. Having gained her permission to help, he placed his hand on her jaw, covering the tooth, and within minutes, her pain had subsided.
In the same way, the laying on of “healing hands” can alleviate your pain and provide relief.
Are there risks or side effects to Reiki?
Reiki is a non-invasive therapy. It is gentle and not known to have any negative side effects. It’s used as a complementary therapy to aid greater well-being. Having said that, if you have past traumas, you should be aware that they can resurface during this form of therapy.
Please note: Crying is common and can indicate a beautiful cleansing of unresolved anguish.
How is Reiki performed?
Reiki is usually performed in a dimly lit room, with healing frequencies and candles. The aim is to create a calming and gentle ambience.
The client is usually asked to lie on their back on a therapy bed – fully clothed – to close their eyes and relax.
Some Reiki practitioners begin with a body scan first to check for any energetic or emotional blockages. Please note that a reiki practitioner is not a medical doctor and should not diagnose any illnesses.
The Reiki practitioner will invoke Reiki into their hands and then either lay their hands on or slightly above (depending on your preference) each of the seven chakras or energy portals of the client. This position is held for about three minutes per chakra. The three minutes are sometimes ended with the sound of a gentle bell, which indicates a move to the next chakra.
There are variations of this process, which may include additional healing points being included in the session or reiki carried out on a client who is sitting, rather than lying down. Each session can be tailored to meet the needs of the client. It is very much an intuitive process.
How long does a Reiki session last?
It typically lasts anything from 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the preference of the client.
Why do I feel tired after Reiki?
Reiki is a powerful current of healing energy that courses through your body: cleansing toxins, clearing energetic and emotional blockages and recreating a path for life force energy to flow vigorously through you once again. This process is exhausting, and you can expect to feel a little tired following your initial reiki sessions. Drinks lots of water and rest up – your body will thank you!
What do I wear to a reiki session?
It’s a good idea to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes to a Reiki session. Comfort is key.
Where can I find a Reiki practitioner?
Reiki practitioners can be found online via search engines or advertised locally in yoga centres, community boards, or health food shops. Many Reiki practitioners now have social media accounts such as Facebook or Instagram.
Please ask your Reiki practitioner for their credentials. Have a chat and see if you two “click”. It’s vital to feel a sense of resonance with your Reiki practitioner, as this will impact the results of the therapy.

How many levels of Reiki are there?
There are three levels in Reiki:
Level I: Shoden
Level I is taught to those who wish to learn to use Reiki energy. The class is taught by a Reiki Master. In Level I, you learn the hand positions used when doing Reiki on yourself and others, the Reiki principles, and the history of Reiki. You then receive four attunements. Once you’ve received these attunements, you are officially a Reiki practitioner! Congratulations! Whether you practice Reiki or not is your choice.
Level II:Okuden
Level II includes the three Reiki symbols (Focus, Harmony, and Connection), Mental/Emotional healing, Distant healing (yes, you can heal from any distance!), the use and meaning for each symbol. You also receive one further attunement at level II.
Level III:Shinpiden
Level III is also known as Master level. The Usui Master symbol meaning and use are taught at this level. This symbol completes the other three symbols taught at level II. Masters are taught how to initiate others into Reiki using the attunement process.
Can Reiki be combined with other therapies?
Of course! Reiki can be combined with other therapies such as massage, aromatherapy, crystals etc. to amplify the benefits. I just love Angel Reiki therapy, which combines the invocation of angelic assistance, meditation, and Reiki to form a powerful support system when the going gets really tough.
What are some applications of Reiki in everyday life?
The applications of reiki are countless! We start every day with a reiki-fueled cup of coffee, followed by a Reiki infused shower. Reiki can be applied to anyone (with their permission, of course!) and anything. It doesn’t have to be an hour-long session in a dimly lit room to be effective!
Reiki is universal energy. It is all around us, just waiting to be invoked for the betterment of each of us and all of us simultaneously.
Does Reiki really work? Only you can discover that for yourself.
